Red Light Camera Traffic
Enforcement
Focus On Safety
About the Red Light Camera Program |
In 2004, the City of Albuquerque implemented its
automated traffic enforcement program to help combat
the serious problem of red-light violations. The program, more commonly known as "red-light
cameras," uses photo enforcement technology to
enforce the law fairly and consistently. The
goal of the program is to reduce violations, prevent crashes,
avoid injuries, and most importantly save lives.

Automated Traffic Enforcement |
In 2004, the City of Albuquerque received a grant
from the State of New Mexico, Traffic Safety Bureau
to install and evaluate the possibility of automated
traffic enforcement in the City of Albuquerque. In September 2004, red-light cameras were
installed at Montgomery and San Mateo and Eubank and
Montgomery. Initially, warning citations were
issued. On May 5, 2005, the
cameras went live.
The City utilizes the services of
Redflex
Traffic Systems, Inc.
who provides and installs the
camera equipment and software for the automated traffic
enforcement program. The City manages and controls the
program, including the site selection process. Automated traffic enforcement programs using red-light
cameras has proven to be an effective tool in reducing
red-light incidents and crashes caused by red-light
violations. The
Albuquerque Fire Department reports a 23% decrease in Level
1 trauma calls at red-light camera enforced intersections. |
|
Fixed Detection Systems |
The city currently has twenty fixed automated traffic enforcement
cameras in operation (see map).
These fixed locations are chosen by police and traffic engineering
staff primarily based on amount of traffic and collision history.
Once an automated traffic enforcement camera is fully operational,
the City pays a monthly rental fee per location. All automated traffic
enforcement locations in the City of Albuquerque capture not only
red light violations but speeding violations as well. |
|
Mobile Detection Systems |
The City's 3 mobile speed vans are used to detect
speeding violations and are used primarily in school
or construction zones but
can be used on any city street.
There are 280 school
zones in the City of Albuquerque with 10,000 students
crossing each day. |
