Overview

The Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) provides sample estimates of statistics for all manufacturing establishments with one or more paid employee.

  • Conducted annually, except for years ending in 2 and 7, at which time ASM statistics are included in the manufacturing sector of the Economic Census.
  • The economic census manufacturing sector is the universe from which the ASM sample frame is selected and provides more detailed statistics.
  • Provides statistics on employment, payroll, supplemental labor costs, cost of materials consumed, operating expenses, value of shipments, value added by manufacturing, detailed capital expenditures, fuels and electric energy used, and inventories.

  • The three data sets issued from the ASM are listed below.

Statistics for Industry Groups and Industries

This file presents manufacturing establishments statistics at the three-, four-, five-, and six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) levels.

  • These estimates represent the portion of the manufacturing population accounted for by establishments with paid employees.
  • Nonemployers are defined as out-of-scope of the ASM.
  • During ASM years, a six-digit industry grouping is published for certain industries. These groupings correspond to two or more individual six-digit NAICS industries within that five-digit NAICS Classification. For more information, see the ASM Industry Groupings.

Value of Product Shipments

This file presents shipments statistics for the 471 six-digit NAICS product groups and approximately 1,710 seven-digit NAICS product classes.

 

Geographic Area Statistics

This file presents statistics for each state and the District of Columbia.
