Advanced Practice Center, Seattle-King County
The Seattle-King County Advanced Practice Center (APC) is a resource for local public health agencies throughout the nation as it develops plans and builds local and regional capacity for responding to an act of bioterrorism or other public health emergency.

Bioterrorism
Public Health - Seattle & King County is aware of the need to be prepared for bioterrorism. For the past several years, Public Health has worked with the local medical community to increase the ability to detect and respond to a bioterrorist attack.

Green River Basin flood preparedness
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has discovered damage to a portion of the Howard Hanson Dam. This dam has controlled flooding in the Green River Valley for the last 40 years, however the dam will only operate at 30% capacity this winter. Therefore, there is a much greater risk of significant flooding during periods of heavy rain throughout the lower Green River Valley, affecting the cities of Auburn, Kent, Renton, and Tukwila.

H1N1 virus (swine flu)
H1N1 virus is an illness caused by a type of influenza A virus that is a known cause of respiratory infections in pigs. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections have occurred infrequently. H1N1 flu viruses can spread from person-to-person, but in the past, have not spread readily among human populations.

Isolation and Quarantine
Public Health - Seattle & King County is leading the region in the unprecedented challenge of meeting preparedness and clinical requirements for disease surveillance, mass treatment operations, and for isolation and quarantine protocols and training.

King County Healthcare Coalition
The King County Healthcare Coalition is a network of healthcare organizations and providers that are committed to strengthening the healthcare system for emergencies.

Pandemic Flu
A pandemic flu is a new influenza virus that could be a much more serious flu virus than seen in a typical flu season. Different from the typical strains of flu, humans would have no or little natural resistance to a new strain of influenza.

Public Health Reserve Corps
Public Health - Seattle & King County is establishing the Public Health Reserve Corps to deploy when disaster impacts our own communities. The Public Health Reserve Corps is a group of volunteers prescreened and trained to augment Public Health staff during an emergency in King County.

Radiological Emergencies
In the event of an emergency involving radiation or radioactive materials, Public Health - Seattle & King County will play an integral role in the local response and will coordinate with local, state and national agencies.

Vulnerable Populations Action Team (VPAT)
The Vulnerable Populations Action Team (VPAT) coordinates countywide preparedness efforts with a wide variety of community partners. The team includes a diverse cross section of staff with public health expertise in vulnerable populations, preparedness and infectious diseases.
