Professional Background:

Mrunal Chapekar received her M.Sc and Ph.D degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Bombay, Bombay, India. She then conducted postdoctoral research at the National Cancer Institute, NIH, evaluating biological effects of cytokines and growth factors such as interferons, tumor necrosis factor, and transforming growth factor beta. In 1988, Mrunal joined the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) at FDA as a reviewer and performed regulatory and technical review of cytokines, growth factors, somatic cell and gene therapy products and tissue engineered products. While at FDA, Mrunal conducted research, participated in the intercenter working groups, gave presentations, and published papers on the regulatory and scientific concerns for growth factors and tissue engineered products.

As a technical program manager in the Chemistry and Life Sciences office at the Advanced Technology Program at NIST, Mrunal's primary focus is on tissue engineering. However, she is also interested in working with industry to develop new opportunities in other promising areas of biotechnology.
