More Data on CD-ROM

To complement the statistics shown by ZIP Code and sector on this website, 1997 Economic Census CD-ROM Volume 3 includes, for each detailed NAICS industry present in each ZIP code, the count of establishments in several employment-size categories, and, except for manufacturing, in several receipts-size categories. The size classes are illustrated below, and the down arrows provide access to detailed industry classifications available within each sector. These establishment counts by size class are not considered to be a disclosure of confidential information, so a data line is present for every kind of business with one or more establishments within a ZIP Code.

The counts include establishments with paid employees. Nonemployers, i.e., establishments with no paid employees, are not published by ZIP Code.

Size-class statistics are shown only for 5-digit ZIP Codes on CD-ROM. Industry totals, without regard to size, are presented for the U.S. and states to facilitate geographic selection menus. The national data presented below are from Establishment and Firm Size reports, but illustrate the detail available for each ZIP Code.

Data for five of the nine covered sectors are limited to firms subject to federal income tax. Tax-exempt firms in those sectors, such as most hospitals, are excluded. Tax-exempt establishments are, however, included but not separately identified in ZIP Code Business Patterns.

Note that the ranges for aggregate sales or receipts, employment, and payroll data shown in hypertext tables for each ZIP Code are not included on the CD-ROM, but may be downloaded at this website.

CD-ROM format

Files are stored in .mdb (Microsoft Access) format. Windows-based software permits user to export to ASCII flat or delimited, spreadsheet or database formats and export to HTML format.
