Public Notice

Tennessee Valley Authority

August 8, 2006

Proposed action

Dredging and construction of a riverfront docking facility

Location

Mile 0.2L, Big Spring Creek, opposite Tennessee River Mile 358.2L, Guntersville Reservoir, Marshall County, Alabama

Description

The applicant proposes to construct a dock facility along a stone spit that was constructed to accommodate a rail line that was used to ferry trains to Hobbs Island until 1949. The cleat-dock would primarily cater to pleasure boats and excursion vessels, with the lakefront park serving as a holding space for the people landing and boarding at Guntersville Landing.

The proposed facility would also be designed to accommodate large riverboats. An estimated total of 2,370 cubic yards of material would be dredged from both sides of the rock spit as measured by the normal pool elevation of 595.4 to provide the required dockside depth for the intended use. The dredged material would be disposed of upland in the Connors Island Industrial Park, where it would be used for fill and road construction. Construction would place about 440 cubic yards back in the lake below the normal pool elevation. For more information, see the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Public Notice.

TVA is interested in receiving comments on the potential of the proposed action to affect the environment or historic properties and would like to identify any other issues associated with this proposal. These comments will be used in reaching a decision on the proposal.
