BFRL Plays Lead Role in New Building Risk Management Guideline

A new guideline on risk management in buildings was recently published by ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. ASHRAE Guideline 29-2009, Risk Management of Public Health and Safety in Buildings, was developed by a project committee on which Andrew Persily of BFRL served as vice chair. Guideline 29-2009 is intended to assist building owners and managers in analyzing what measures should be put in place to protect occupants and property from extraordinary incidents, including both natural disasters and intentional attacks. The document is the first such publication on building protection developed by an industry group consisting of engineers, architects, contractors, and building owners. It provides a flexible approach to risk assessment for the range of health and safety hazards to enable informed decision making. The guidance covers the evaluation, design, and implementation of measures to reduce multiple risks in new and existing buildings, including fire, seismic events, chemical and biological releases, blasts, and other extraordinary hazards. Building performance issues that are addressed include egress; chemical, biological, and radiological protection; fire protection; smoke removal or purging; filtration; indoor air quality; entrance paths for contaminants; and building envelopes.
