CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO AREA, JUNE 2009
Prices Increased 0.2 Percent During the Past Twelve Months

The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today that the June 2009 All Items Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area increased 0.8 percent over the past two months. This equals the earlier 0.8 percent increase for the February to April period. Regional Commissioner Richard J. Holden noted that higher transportation prices made a large contribution to the recent increase in consumer prices. Over the past year, Bay Area consumer prices edged up 0.2 percent. The special aggregate index for energy decreased 26.0 percent since June 2008. During this same period the special index for all items less food and energy increased 2.8 percent. Local Consumer Price Index data are not seasonally adjusted.

Transportation prices in the San Francisco area increased by 6.5 percent between April and June. Over the past 12 months, transportation prices declined by 10.8 percent. The transportation index accounts for approximately 15 percent of the all items index. Within the transportation index, gasoline prices jumped 27.4 percent over the past two months, but fell 34.6 percent over the past year.

The housing index, which comprises 47 percent of the San Francisco area’s all items index, increased 0.3 percent since April and 2.2 percent compared to 12 months ago. Shelter, household fuels and utilities, and household furnishings and operations are all components of the housing index. Shelter prices decreased 0.4 percent over the past two months, but increased 1.9 percent over the past year. Prices for household fuels and utilities advanced 5.4 percent since April, but declined 1.2 percent since June 2008. Within household fuels and utilities, the utility (piped) gas service index increased 2.6 percent and electricity prices advanced 9.0 percent during the past two months. Since June 2008, the utility (piped) gas service index dropped 36.1 percent, while electricity prices rose 13.1 percent. Household furnishings and operations advanced 1.9 percent since April and 7.3 percent since last year.

Food and beverages prices in the San Francisco area did not change between April and June, yet advanced 1.9 percent compared to 12 months ago. The food at home index, which measures grocery prices, decreased 0.3 percent over the past two months, but edged up 0.1 percent from a year ago. Food away from home prices advanced 0.4 percent since April and 4.5 percent since June 2008. Additionally, prices for alcoholic beverages inched up 0.1 percent over the past two months, yet declined 0.8 percent over the past year.

Medical care prices showed no change since April, yet advanced 3.9 percent since June 2008.

The apparel index declined 9.9 percent over the past two months, but advanced 7.5 percent over the past year.

The San Francisco area’s education and communication index increased 0.6 percent since April and has advanced 4.3 percent since June 2008.

Among the remaining major expenditure categories, the recreation index edged up 0.1 percent and the other goods and services index increased 0.7 percent between April and June. Over the past year, recreation prices advanced 0.8 percent and other goods and services prices rose 6.2 percent.

The All Items Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area, stands at 225.692 (1982-84=100). This means a market basket of goods and services that cost $100.00 in 1982-84 would have cost $225.69 in June 2009.
