Beluga Whale Co-Management Agreements

The Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), section 119, allows NMFS to enter into cooperative agreements with Alaska Native organizations to conserve marine mammals and to co-manage subsistence. The MMPA also authorizes grants to AlaskaNative organizations to participate in research and monitoring efforts and to develop cooperative structures with federal agencies that are necessary for the conservation of marine mammals.
