Each Ramadan, the ninth month on the lunar calendar, Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days. Fasting is a tradition in many religious faiths and is meant to increase spirituality, discipline, thankfulness, and consciousness of God's mercy. Ramadan is also a time of giving and reaching out to those less fortunate, and this summer, American Muslims have joined their fellow citizens in serving communities across the country. (more) |

Ruch Visits Hyderabad The American Documentary Showcase, a set of 29 American documentary films put together by the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State, was screened for the first time in Hyderabad, with the screening of Mel Stuart’s The Hobart Shakespeareans, one of the films in the showcase. Keur said that Hyderabad was the center of gravity for Urdu studies not just in India but across the world. “It is very appropriate that this conference should take place in Hyderabad because with the study of Urdu, given its sharing the script with Arabic, goes hand in hand with the study of the Quran,” he said. Thursday July 23, 2009 | Consul General Reaches Out to Special ChildrenConsul General Cornelis M. Keur visited Genesis-Right school on Thursday July 23. Genesis has over 300 students enrolled including 68 physically challenged children. It is one of the few schools that integrates its special needs students into regular classrooms. During the meeting Management Officer explained the profound impact the policy, announced on May 23, had on all officers with domestic partners because it meant they were no longer invisible. Keur Visits Old City of Hyderabad To encourage a better understanding between the US Consulate General Hyderabad and the people of city, Consul General Cornelis M. Keur and Mrs. Sommay Keur visited Barkas, a locality in the Old City of Hyderabad. Dominated by descendants of Yemeni families who served in the Nizam’s Army, the residents gave Consul General Keur a traditional welcome by presenting him a kafiya, while drums played in the background. Deeply inspired by President Obama’s recent speech at Cairo, the community elders hailed the President a true statesman. The Consul General presented an Urdu translation of President Obama's Cairo speech to the community. |

July 2, 2009Picture Gallery | Consulate General Hyderabad Celebrates Its First July 4 Over 400 guests from politics, business, media, religious communities and culture joined Consul General Cornelis M. Keur and his team in celebrating the 233rd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. US Consulate Hyderabad celebrated its first July 4 event on July 2. Consul General Cornelis M. Keur hosted the event at Marriot Hyderabad where Andhra Pradesh Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari was the chief guest. Management officer Mr. William Boyle and consular staff Ms. Archana Talapuru sang the American (The Star Spangled Banner) and Indian (Jana Gana Mana) national anthems respectively. |
| Hyderabad Consular Section Handling 440 Visa Applicants a Day Consular services are less painful and more efficient each day at the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad. And no long lines either! From the time applicants arrive at the main gate until the end of the interview takes approximately one hour now. When the Consulate General opened in March, just 100 visas were processed each day. Now more than 440 applications are processed each day and consular staff are aiming for 500 applications by the end of the summer. (more) |
