Veterans

The men and women who choose to serve in our Armed Forces are heroes, and it is the responsibility of the federal government to repay their service and sacrifice with an active and effective support system, medical care and other benefits. During my time in Congress I have made serving our veterans a priority and have worked to support a variety of initiatives improving veterans’ services.

 These initiatives include:

  • Travel reimbursements and tax deductions for veterans traveling to VA hospitals
  • Additional funding for VA medical facilities, medical services (including mental health) and the homeless veterans grant program
  • The economic stimulus package that sent rebate checks to 250,000 disabled veterans
  • Increases in vets disability payments
  • Additional medical care for vets living in rural areas

As we move forward in the 111th Congress, we must continue to build on the current VA medical system to ensure that our veterans receive the top notch treatment they deserve. Our troops stationed abroad deserve a hero’s welcome when they come home, and I will continue to work with leaders in both parties to ensure that’s what they receive.

In addition to legislative work, my office may be able to help with federal agencies and direct veterans to various services and programs. Please look over the following information for veterans:

VA Healthcare Eligibility

Eligibility for veteran's health care benefits is based on active military service in the Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, or Coast Guard (or Merchant Marines during World War II), and being discharged under honorable conditions. Eligibility is not limited to those who served in combat or suffered service-connected injuries. Reservists and National Guard members called to active duty by an Executive Order may also qualify for VA healthcare benefits.

Returning service men and women have special eligibility for hospital care, medical services and nursing home care for two years following discharge from active duty.

Learn about the benefits you may be eligible for by clicking here or calling 1-877-222-8387.

Transitioning Back Home

The VA provides a Transition Assistance Program and Disabled Transition Assistance Program (TAP/DTAP) throughout the United States. Briefings give separating service members helpful information on the transition back to civilian life.

Contact your Transition Center to determine when Transition Assistance Briefings are scheduled. For more information, click here of contact my office at 405-234-9900.
