Fighting for Universal Health Care
There is a very serious health care crisis in America that must be addressed now by the Congress and the President. I have introduced HR 676, The United States National Health Insurance Act, to ensure that every American, regardless of income, employment status, or race, has access to quality, affordable health care services.
Helping Americans Avoid Home Forclosure
In the 111th congress Mr. Conyers introduced H.R. 200, theHelping Families Save Their Homes in Bankruptcy Act of 2009. If passed by the full House of Representatives, the full Senate, and signed by President Obama this legislation will allow qualifying homeowners facing foreclosure to restructure their home morgages under the protection of Chapter 13.
Weatherization
Michigan's Weatherization program will be awarded over $240 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This funding will provide resources which will allow eligible low-income homes to be made energy efficient at no cost to the residents. This investment shows the commitment of both Congress and the White House to providing green jobs and improving the environment.
CBCF Scholarship Program
The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) is pleased to announce the expansion of the Louis Stokes Health Scholars program. For the 2009-10 academic year, CBCF will award 10 scholarships of up to $8,000 to high school seniors or college students who are enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, vocational or technical school. Applicants must be seeking a degree in a subject that will lead to a career in a health field.
The Louis Stokes Health Scholars program uses an online application that can be found at http://www.cbcfinc.org/louis-stokes-health-scholars-program.html. Supplemental materials are also required and must also be submitted directly to CBCF to my attention at the address below by July 16, 2009.
Opportunities to Become A Congressional Page
Rep. Conyers encourages students from Michigan to apply for this educational opportunity which allows juniors in high school to live with other Pages in a supervised dormitory, take classes at the Page School and be exposed to the legislative process. There are three sessions for Pages: fall, spring and summer. If it is not Rep. Conyers' turn to nominate a page, you should contact another Michigan Representative.
