House Passes Common Sense Mortgage Reform and Consumer Protection Bills
Washington DC – Today, the House of Representatives passed the second of two bills designed to bring common sense reform and consumer protection to the financial markets and mortgage lending.  “Congress and President Obama have been working hard to tackle the financial lending crisis and the meltdown in the mortgage industry, but as that work moves forward we also have to make sure that this does not happen again.  We need to protect consumers from unscrupulous lenders,” said Congressman Jim Oberstar.

Silver Bay Veterans Home Receives $3.9 Million Grant

Washington DC – A $3.9 million federal grant will help the State of Minnesota renovate the Silver Bay Veterans Home.  Today, Congressman Jim Oberstar announced that the Department of Veterans Affairs awarded the grant, which will pay for 65 percent of the cost of upgrading the facility; the state has guaranteed the rest of the funding for the project.

Stimulus Funds to Help Unemployed Minnesota Workers

Washington DC – Minnesota will receive $130 million to help make unemployment payments to laid-off workers.   The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act allocated $7 billion to the U.S. Department of Labor to help states meet increased demand on their unemployment insurance programs caused by the economic downturn.
