New York, NY – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) joined with New Yorkers and representatives of Consumers Union, NYPIRG, Demos, and NEDAP to hail new credit card reforms that went into effect this morning. Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the Joint Economic Committee, released the following statement in reaction to last Friday’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) jobs report and the continued negative effects of the recession on the African American community:

“Though recent economic indicators suggest that the worst of the recession may be behind us, the numbers in the July Jobs Report serve as a sobering reminder of the disparate impact this recession’s unemployment has had on the African American community. African American women have been particularly hard hit. The unemployment rate among African American adult women is 11.7 percent, which is nearly 75 percent higher than the unemployment rate for adult White women.
