On January 28, 2009, Congressman Barrow joined a majority in the House of Representatives in supporting the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The bill was signed into law by the President on February 17, 2009. Here, you can see how stimulus dollars are being spent at home in Georgia's 12th Congressional District.

On April 4, 2009, Congressman Barrow visited Sylvania and marched in the 2009 Screven County Livestock Parade.  This year's theme was, "Rock Around the Clock with Livestock."

On April 16, 2009, Congressman Barrow toured the Jeann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro and met with faculty, administration, and students.  In 2004, the Board of Regents established the school as the first School of Public Health in the University System of Georgia as a response to the compelling need to address public health concerns in Georgia, particularly among rural and underserved areas.

On April 15, 2009, Congressman Barrow met with health care providers at the Swainsboro Health Fair.  Congressman Barrow hosted healthcare fairs that were free and open to the public in Savannah, Vidalia, Swainsboro, and Augusta from April 13-17, 2009.  Folks from all over the 12th District came out for free screenings, information, and demonstrations.

On April 21, 2009, Congressman Barrow and students from Georgia Military College in Milledgeville took part in a wreath-laying honoring Congressman Carl Vinson at the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC.  Carl Vinson, from Milledgeville, served in Congress for over 50 years and was instrumental in the modernization of our military through World War 2 and during the beginning of the Cold War.  Students from Georgia Military College travel to DC every year and honor his memory.

BARROW ANNOUNCES THAT ECONOMIC RECOVERY PAYMENTS BEGIN TO GO TO SOCIAL SECURITY RECIPIENTS TODAY May 7, 2009

Washington, D.C. - Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) announced that payments of $250 are going to Social Security recipients beginning today, May 7, with the goal that all such payments will be sent out by the end of May.  These payments are provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Bill creates commission to investigate financial crisis

 

Washington, D.C. - Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) voted today to drastically strengthen the enforcement and prosecution of mortgage and corporate fraud.  The Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act will provide critical funding and tools to help law enforcement pursue and prosecute the type of fraud many blame for the worst financial crisis in decades. The legislation will also establish a bipartisan commission to investigate the causes of the collapse of our financial system and the ensuing recession.

Hearing on Barrow P2P Legislation Held on Tuesday May 5, 2009

Washington, D.C. - The House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection held a hearing today on H.R. 1319, the Informed P2P User Act. Congressman John Barrow (GA), Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), and Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX) introduced H.R. 1319 earlier this year. Congressman Barrow is a member of the Subcommittee and delivered an opening statement.

Processing of Applications for New GI Bill Benefits to Begin Today May 1, 2009

Barrow encourages eligible veterans to apply online

 

Washington, D.C. - Veterans eligible for education benefits under the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, also known as the "New GI Bill," are able to apply for benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs online beginning today, Friday, May 1.  Members of the military who have served on active duty since September 11, 2001, including activated reservists and members of the National Guard, receive up to four academic years of education benefits, including stipends for housing and books.  Veterans will have up to 15 years after they leave active duty to use their education benefits.

THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY March 11, 2009

On February 13, the House and the Senate passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th.  The bill is estimated to create or save 3.5 million jobs throughout the country, including 106,000 jobs in Georgia and 7,700 jobs in the 12th District.

Congressman Barrow has put together a guidebook detailing potential funding opportunities for local officials, community leaders, non-profit organizations, first responders, school districts, small businesses, and individuals from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for 12th District.

SOCIAL SECURITY, RAILROAD RETIREMENT, VETERANS DISABILITY, AND SSI BENEFICIARY PAYMENTS
On January 28, 2009, President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which provides a one-time $250 economic recovery payment to be made to Social Security, Railroad Retirement, Veterans Disability, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries.
