On Aug. 3, 2009, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced that the HHS delegated the authority to administer and enforce the HIPAA security rule to the OCR director. This action is expected to improve HHS’ ability to protect individuals’ health information by combining the authority for administration and enforcement of health information privacy and security called for in HIPAA.
