Biography

Jun Liu, Ph.D., has a background in colloidal and surface science, materials processing, and high-resolution electron microscopy. He initiated and led a broad range of basic and applied research programs in materials science at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). He was appointed to Level VI Senior Staff Scientist position (equivalent to laboratory fellow now) in 2000. In January 2001, he left PNNL to join Lucent Bell Laboratory to conduct research on optical fibers. He joined Sandia National Laboratories in July 2001. At Sandia, he served as the department manager for Chemical Synthesis and Nanomaterials, and Complex Functional Nanomaterials Thrust Leader for Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT). In October 2005, Jun Liu rejoined PNNL as a Laboratory Fellow to lead the synthesis task within the catalysis initiative.

Dr. Liu's research activities include developing novel functional materials, self-assembly of synthetic materials and hybrid materials/devices involving active biomolecules, developing fundamental understanding for large-scale fabrication of nanomaterials, controlled nucleation and growth, catalytic science, chemical and biosensing, targeted and controlled drug release, etc. Dr. Liu's research has an impact on the direction of nanoscience research. He is a pioneer, and a creative leader in the area of self-assembled nanoscale materials. His research includes "cutting edge" programs ranging from fundamental studies of molecularly organized nanostructural materials, to self-organization of complex proteins, to the development of unique materials aimed at a particular application. Dr. Liu made significant contributions in many areas that are critical to DOE's scientific mission, from understanding tank waste chemistry, to the development of key dielectric materials for microelectronics, efficient environmental remediation technology, smart and responsive composite materials and thin films, carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube composites, highly dispersed catalyst materials, and labeling-free biomolecular sensing. His research in the understanding and application of self-assembled molecular structures, in the development of multifunctional nanoscale materials with size and shape selectivity, and latterly in controlled crystal growth and in active self-assembly using molecular motors and microtubules, is considered at the forefront of materials science.

Dr. Liu is the author and co-author of 100 technical papers, an invited author for many book chapters, and a co-author and editor of several books. He has published many invited review articles and has presented numerous invited seminars at national and international conferences, workshops, and major research institutes. Dr. Liu's research has received considerable attention in the scientific community and popular press with feature articles and news highlights. His research also has been featured as cover pages in leading journals.
