Briefly

William Kandel conducts demographic research on immigration, race, and ethnicity in rural America for the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His current research analyzes new geographic destinations of rural immigrants, immigrant integration, public policy impacts of rural Hispanic population growth, farm labor, and the role of industrial restructuring in demographic change. Prior to moving to Washington DC, he conducted postdoctoral research in international demography and income inequality at Penn States Population Research Institute. William earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago and his M.S. in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University. His recent book, Population Change and Rural Society, co-edited with David Brown of Cornell University, was published by Springer Publishers in 2006.

Background

William Kandel joined ERS in September 2001 and has since applied his background in international migration and industrial restructuring to demographic research on rural Hispanics and immigrants. His current research focuses on new geographic destinations of rural immigrants, public policy impacts of rural Hispanic population growth, and the role of industrial restructuring in demographic change. He is also currently editing a book with David Brown of Cornell University on rural population and extending an analysis on Hispanic labor market outcomes in nonmetropolitan counties with Robert Gibbs. William obtained a Masters degree in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University in 1991 and a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Chicago in 1998. His dissertation research examined impacts of temporary U.S. migration on Mexican children's educational attainment and involved 15 months of survey and ethnographic research in Mexico and California. From 1998 2000, he conducted postdoctoral work in international demography and income inequality at the Population Research Institute at Pennsylvania State University.
