Library Services

ALIC’s collection contains published materials such as books, government documents, microforms, audio and video tapes, and CD-ROMs which support management of and research in the records of the U.S. Government. The library maintains collections in two locations in the Washington, D.C. area. Some Presidential Libraries also maintain separate printed materials collections which are open to research.


Archives I Library Collections

The downtown Archives I library has an up-to-date reference collection located in Room G-30. The general collection of Archives I concentrates on U.S. history before World War I, state history, law, genealogy, and Army history.

Archives I call number holdings for the general collection:
  • Heraldry and Genealogy (CR-CS)
  • World History (D)
  • U.S. History to WWII (E1-739)
  • Local and State History (F)
All other classifications are housed at Archives II.

Archives II Library Collections

The main library collection, housed at the National Archives at College Park, focuses on archival administration, administrative history, American history and government, biography, information management, and government documents. The library’s main reading room in Room 3000 includes a complete and up-to-date reference and periodical collection, published materials, microforms, and a number of online services. The rest of the main library’s holdings are kept in a stack area to be retrieved upon request.
