Biomass Documents

Documents produced by the National Bioenergy Center and many other documents related to biomass conversion technologies may be accessed online in several different ways.

  • National Biomass Program Document Database

The Biomass Document Database provides access to most biofuels and many other biomass documents produced by the National Bioenergy Center and its subcontractors since 1980. Most of the more recent documents are available as full text PDFs.

  • U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Alternative Fuels Data Center

The Alternative Fuels Data Center is a larger database that includes all the biofuels documents in the Biomass Document Database plus ones related to alternative fuels and alternative-fuel vehicles. It also includes sources other than NREL documents.

  • National Renewable Energy Laboratory Publications Database

The NREL Publications Database covers biomass technology documents written or edited by NREL staff and subcontractors from 1977 to the present. The database includes technical reports as well as outreach publications such as brochures and fact sheets. Coverage is nearly complete for NREL technical reports, less so but still extensive for journal articles and subcontract reports. NREL reports published from 1999 to the present are available as full text PDFs.

  • DOE Information Bridge

This publications database is similar to the NREL Publications Database, but covers the entire U.S. Department of Energy system, thus including biomass documents produced by other DOE national laboratories. It has a growing collection of full text documents from 1995 forward.

Web Sites

  • U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Biomass Program

The primary objectives of DOE's Biomass Program are to support development of technology for production of fuels, chemicals, and power. The great majority of the work of the National Bioenergy Center is in support of this program. This Web site includes descriptions of biofuels and biomass power technologies and projects, resource issues, and other information sources.

  • Interagency Biomass Research and Development Initiative

As directed by an August 1999 executive order and the Biomass Research and Development Act Of 2000, the U.S. Departments of Energy and Agriculture and five other federal agencies are developing a coordinated program for promoting biomass conversion technologies. This effort includes thermochemical technology as well as biotechnology, and chemical as well as fuel products.

  • Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy of the DOE maintains a general information and inquiry Web site about renewable energy. This bioenergy page includes links to a large number of related sites.

  • State Energy Alternatives

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and the National Conference of State Legislatures maintain a Web site that provides good general information about current biomass use as well as research on new technology. It also has state specific information about biomass resources, projects, and programs.
