OBJECTIVES: Analyze attitudes and knowledge towards HIV infection and AIDS among high school students and its relationships with age, sex, social variables and sexual activity to implement health education programs. METHODS: A representative (size: 2640) sample of high school students in Zaragoza, Spain, was made. Survey included 60 general items (social, knowledge and attitudes) and 3 for sexual activities and was conducted during a week period to avoid contamination among students. A descriptive analysis and proportion comparison between groups was made with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: We have found a good level of knowledge, mainly of individual prevention measures, and an important amount of fear and rejection attitudes. There are significative differences in knowledge among low and high age students. Better attitudes are significatively related with females, non-university oriented courses and among those who have had sexual intercourse. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge is related mainly to modes of transmission and not necessarily to the social importance of AIDS in itself: there is no real understanding of the problem. Rejection attitudes are a logic consequence of the fear AIDS produces in population. Our results lead us to carry out health education programs towards attitudes and not knowledge.
