The U.S. Bureau of the Census conducts an annual and quarterly survey of state and local government employee-retirement systems. Employee-retirement systems of state and local governments are an important component of the nation's government sector. These retirement systems are a source of current and future income for millions of retirees and maintain large volumes of investment holding.

The State and Local Government Employee-Retirement System Survey is an annual survey that presents figures for the nation, states, and individual systems, on the receipts, payments, financial assets and membership of employee-retirement systems.

The Finances of Selected Public Employee-Retirement Systems Survey is a quarterly survey that presents summary data on the assets, revenues, and expenditures of the largest government employee-retirement systems.
