Despite tight budgets, over 800 ocean and coastal management practitioners gathered in Boston for the 16th biennial Coastal Zone (CZ09) conference. The conference, with its theme of “Revolutionary Times: Catching the Wave of Change,” provided an opportunity for coastal professionals to learn and share effective management approaches during this time of rapid transformation.
The opening plenary featured top administrators from NOAA, the Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These leaders discussed the national climate change strategy and how it will impact coastal communities and organizations. Other conference topics included regional ocean governance, coastal conservation and restoration, marine protected areas, coastal and ocean observations, and land use planning.
