Kathryn M. Butler, and Nelson P. Bryner, have received the 2000 Equal Employment Opportunity/Diversity Award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, an agency of the Commerce Department's Technology Administration.

Butler, a physicist, and Bryner, a chemical engineer, both work in the NIST Building and Fire Research Laboratory.

Butler and Bryner are recognized for their effort, initiative and perseverance toward the active advancement of diversity at NIST. As chairs of the first-ever diversity committee within one of the agency's organizational units, Butler and Bryner built and led a team that made significant accomplishments in improving communications, developing careers, and fostering recruitment of an excellent and diverse staff. Their BFRL committee served as a model for the subsequent formation of other NIST diversity committees.

The NIST EEO/Diversity Award, initiated in 1977, recognizes significant EEO/diversity contributions that have been performed in an exceedingly outstanding manner by an agency employee.
