Among the research areas studied by NASA's "A-Train," a string of NASA Earth-monitoring satellites that orbit one behind the other on the same track, are tropical cyclones -- the collective term for tropical depressions, tropical storms, hurricanes and typhoons. Included are JPL's Atmospheric Infrared Sounder instrument on NASA's Aqua spacecraft; CloudSat; and the Microwave Limb Sounder and Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer instruments on NASA's Aura spacecraft.
