| Solicitation for Grant Applications - National Technical Assistance, Policy, and Research Center for Employers on Employment of People with Disabilities.The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy announces the availability of up to $1.6 million to fund a National Technical Assistance, Policy, and Research Center for Employers on the Employment of People with Disabilities. Under this cooperative agreement, the Center will conduct research, assist in the development and promotion of employer-focused policy, disseminate information, and provide technical assistance to a wide range of employers and employer organizations on the recruitment, hiring, retention, and advancement of people with disabilities. There will be an initial 12-month period of performance, and the possibility of up to four additional option years of funding at the discretion of the Department depending on the availability of funds and satisfactory performance.

| July 2009 Disability Employment Statistics ReleasedIn July 2009, the percentage of people with disabilities in the labor force was 23.0 compared with 71.8 for persons with no disability. The unemployment rate for those with disabilities was 15.1 percent, compared with 9.5 percent for persons with no disability, not seasonally adjusted.

Blind since birth, Ms. Martinez comes to ODEP with a background as an internationally recognized disability rights leader specializing in employment, asset building, independent living, international development, diversity and gender issues. |
