Abstract

A sampler of applications of statistical methods to problems that I have encountered in the course of 30 years of statistical practice, including observations on the development of the field, and on current problems in science and technology that suggest new directions and opportunities for the advancement of statistics as vital agent in the growth of knowledge. These statistical tales, all briefly told, illustrate applications in fields that range from earth sciences to finance, including industrial metrology, environmental conservation, weapon guidance, remote sensing of planetary surfaces, analysis of pedigrees, and the measurement of biological gene expression.
