NDI Delegation Assesses Pre-election Political Climate in Lebanon

An NDI delegation visited Lebanon from May 5-8 to assess preparations for the June 7 parliamentary elections. The mission’s goal was to provide an accurate and impartial assessment of the political climate leading up to the polls and to demonstrate the interest of the international community in the development of the democratic political process and governance in Lebanon. The delegation was led by NDI Chairman Madeleine Albright, former secretary of state, and Joseph Clark, former prime minister of Canada.

Macedonia Code of Conduct Campaign Contributes to Brighter Prospects for EU Membership

Drawing on lessons learned in previous elections, NDI and its partner, the Institute for Parliamentary Democracy, conducted a code of conduct campaign in support of recent elections for Macedonia's presidency and local governments. The campaign, which was designed to help avert the violence and misconduct that affected previous elections, stressed the importance of fair, well-run elections to potential European Union membership.

Partner Spotlights

A recent article in the Daily Trust, one of Nigeria’s most popular newspapers, documented the work of a National Assembly office that helps civic groups better communicate with lawmakers and their staffs. The liaison office arose out of a three-year NDI program that provided assistance to members of the National Assembly and civic groups to improve policymaking procedures on government transparency and poverty reduction issues.

In-Country Perspectives

Sudanese living in the resource-rich border region between the north and south of the country have bleak views of their current situation and the future, according to focus group research released this month by NDI. The report, titled Losing Hope: Citizen Perceptions of Peace and Reconciliation in the Three Areas, summarizes findings from 62 focus groups conducted in Southern Kordofan, Abyei and Blue Nile in 2008.
