USADF Signs Three grants with nigeria

Projects Create Jobs, Serve Community Needs

WASHINGTON - March 2, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 2, 2009 – The United States African Development Foundation (USADF) signed a three grants today with Nigerian groups that will help alleviate poverty. The grants will benefit Gamji Gate Fish Vendors Development Project (GGKFCS), Headway Multipurpose Cooperative Society (HMCS), and Mando Almumamud Oil Mill Multipurpose Cooperative Society (MAOMCS).

Upon signing the grant, USADF President Lloyd Pierson stated, “These grants are designed to work with community members to enhance their communities and meet the local needs of people.”

 GGKFCS is a cooperative society owned by 70 low-income fishermen, artisanal producers, processors, and marketers located in and around Kaduna. GGKCS produces a valuable protein source and provides stable employment opportunities in communities where jobs are scarce. The $53,661 grant will be obligated over two years to GGKCS. The proposed USADF project is aimed at contributing to the growth and development of the small-scale fish industry in Kaduna State by providing grant support and technical assistance. The grantee will procure and install modern processing kilns and storage facilities and move the fisherman into the marketing chain. This project also conforms to the Nigerian Government’s Seven Point economic reform agenda, bridging the supply gap of the product and improving the dietary intake of residents.

MAOMCD is a thirty-five member cooperative society located in the outskirts of Kaduna Nigeria that processes groundnuts into groundnut oil and groundnut cake. The vision of MAOMCS is to expand its production capacity and the quality of its primary product groundnut oil.  The $180,197 grant will be obligated over five years to the Cooperative. The Cooperative seeks to help develop the country’s self-sufficiency in vegetable oil production while also improving the welfare of its members USADF funds will fund working capital, additional processing equipment to increase production, technical assistance and training of MAOMCS’s staff.

HMCS is a wholly owned by members who reside in the Afaka village and its surrounding communities in Kaduna State. GGKCS produces a valuable protein source and provides stable employment opportunities in communities where jobs are scarce. The $44,893 grant will be obligated over two years to the Society. HMCS seeks to contribute to the increase in local production capacity to meet the ever growing demand for rice and to improve the food security situation in the state and the nation. USADF funds will be used to purchase and install a rice processing and milling facility and to provide access to technical assistance capacity building activities.
