USADF Signs Grant to Support Community Group in Ghana:

WASHINGTON - July 7, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 7, 2009 – The United States African Development Foundation (USADF) has signed a grant at its Washington, D.C. office to benefit a grassroots group in Ghana.  The grant will benefit Ejisu Juaben Pig Farmers and Processors Association.

After signing the grant, USADF President Lloyd Pierson stated, “By directly funding this Association, USADF is promoting economic development at the grassroots level in Ghana.”

Located in the Ashanti region of Ghana, Ejisu is an Association that rears pigs, processes and markets pork, and assists its members to obtain reasonable prices for its products.  Ejisu would like to take advantage of the increase market demand for such products.  However, outdated and obsolete technology, weak internal and market capacities, and lack of working capital prevent the company from capitalizing on the market demand.

The four year grant is designed to increase the incomes of Ejisu’s its forty-five members and raise their quality of life.  Specifically, funds will purchase feed storage equipment and a vehicle to facilitate delivery of products, training, installing electricity, and developing promotional materials.

USADF established programming in Ghana in 1984.  Ghana’s current portfolio stands at twenty-two investment projects totaling nearly $4.6 million dollars.  For more information about the portfolio, please visit the country’s quick source page at http://www.adf.gov/USADF-QuickSourceCountryPortfolioPage-Ghana.htm .

The United States African Development Foundation (USADF) is a United States Government agency dedicated to expanding access to economic opportunity in Africa. Currently USADF operates in 20 African nations.  Over the past 25 years, USADF has funded nearly 1,500 projects representing in excess of $150 million in support of African enterprises and local African communities.  For more information on USADF, its programs and application guidelines, visit www.usadf.gov.
