About Mosquito-Borne Illnesses: Mosquito-borne illnesses include West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis, and
Eastern Equine encephalitis. These illnesses affect birds, animals and humans, causing flu-like symptoms in people who are bitten
by infected mosquitoes. Occasionally, illness can be severe, leading to meningitis or encephalitis.

Dead Birds: Birds are very susceptible to West Nile Virus, especially blue jays and crows. Dead birds in an area are a good early warning that
infected mosquitoes are present. Reporting dead birds of all kinds is
one of the best ways you can help with the Department's surveillance of West Nile Virus. Mississippi residents can report a dead bird by calling 1-877-WST-NILE (1-877-978-6453).
Prevention: Mosquito-borne illnesses can be prevented by eliminating places where mosquitoes breed, and by protecting yourself from mosquito bites
