ITS Standards Program

Why is there an ITS Standards Program?

Section 5206 of TEA-21 mandates that the U.S. Department of Transportation "develop, implement, and maintain a National Architecture and supporting standards and protocols to promote the widespread use of ITS technology, ensuring interoperability and efficiency to the maximum extent practicable."

The ITS Standards Program meets this mandate by overseeing the development of ITS standards, by working with State and local transportation agencies to develop strategies for standards-based ITS deployments, and by providing outreach, education, and training to facilitate the use of ITS standards.
