What's Hot: Fatal Work Injuries Report Released Today

A total of 5,071 fatal work injuries were recorded in the US last year, down from 5,657 in 2007, according to the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. The CFOI, part of the BLS occupational safety and health statistics program, compiles a count of all fatal work injuries occurring in the U.S. during the calendar year.


News You Can Use: Help with Health Benefits

Workers who lose a job or are involuntarily terminated between September 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009, may qualify for a 65% subsidy of group health premiums paid under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). Employers may also need information on how to comply. Both can contact the Department's Employee Benefits Security Security Administration at 1-866-444-3272.

DOL is "First Fed" for Project SEARCH

Starting next week, the DOL's Frances Perkins Building will serve as a school house and workplace for up to a dozen DC high school seniors with cognitive disabilities participating in a unique program called Project SEARCH. The Office of Disability Employment Policy welcomed the students, their families, teachers and counselors, along with the project's partners at a special reception on Wednesday. OFCCP Action Against Gerber

Gerber Products has agreed to settle findings of hiring discrimination against 1,912 rejected minority and female applicants for entry-level positions, and will pay $900,000 in back pay and wages.

Data Point: Real Earnings Increase

Earnings rose by 2.5 percent over the last year, but because of declining prices, real earnings — the value of what people can buy with their income — increased by 5.1 percent.
