The Early Years
The non-existence of a Political Science Program did not preclude National Science Foundation support for Political Science research. During the first half of the 1960's, NSF awards to political scientists were made, and they continue to have an impact. The awards were:
- Duncan MacRae (1961) "Computer Study of Representation"
- James David Barber (1961) "Small Group Decisionmaking"
- Harold Guetzkow (1962) "Dimensionality of Nations"
- Warren Miller (1963) "Data Repository for the Inter-University Consortium"
- Heinz Eulau ( 1964) "Decisionmaking in Small Group"
- Angus Campbell (1964) "Pilot Study for a Continuing Survey of Social Change"
- William Riker (1965) "Coalition Formation in Triad"
- James Q. Wilson & Edward Banfield (1965) "Community Electoral Studies"
The program's initial FY 1965 allocation for Political Science research totalled approximately $300,000. The FY 1965 portfolio consisted of 7 research grants and 2 conferences:
- Raymond Tanter, "Comparative International Processes"
- Roy Laird, "Comparative Study of Agricultural Systems"
- Arthur Goldberg, "Causal Modeling of Voting Behavior"
- Everett Ladd, "Comparative Study of Ideology"
- Allan Kornberg, "Comparative Study of Political Socialization & Recruitment"
- L. A. Froman, Jr., "Experimental tests of a Theory of Bargaining"
- Rudolph Rummel, "Dimensionality of Nations"
- Warren Miller, "Conference - Comparative Study of American Political Behavior"
- Thomas Dye, "Conference - Comparative Study of Local Communities"
