Stevens Praises Senator Lott for Leadership on Commerce Committee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee Vice Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) today praised Senator Trent Lott (R-Miss.) for his leadership on Commerce Committee issues in the Senate.

Senator Stevens made the following statement today:

“I would like to take a few moments of the Committee’s time to say ‘farewell’ to Senator Lott.  He has been a valuable member of the Senate and an active member of this Committee for 19 years.

“During his many years of service, Trent has mastered the art of compromise which is something that this Committee always needs.  That is especially evident as he is also the only person to have served as Whip in both the House and the Senate.

“Trent has been engaged in negotiating many important pieces of legislation that have originated from this Committee, such as FAA Reauthorizations (in 2003 and again this year), CAFE reform, many Coast Guard reauthorizations, and Pipeline Safety reauthorization – to name just a few.

“People have said that if there is anyone in the Senate who can ‘herd cats,’ it is Trent.  Trent has certainly been an asset for us and has been there advocating for floor time for Committee bills.

“Getting bills out of Committee is only half the battle as we all know, and Trent has worked his magic to make sure Commerce bills have a fighting chance on the floor many times.

“He has been a dedicated member of this Committee, a staunch supporter of my state, and a personal friend.  Catherine and I wish you the best, my friend.  We are sorry to lose you and we hope you and Tricia have a great future.  You will certainly be missed.”
