Annual OSHA – Madison Area Technical College Alliance Report January 26, 2007
I. Alliance Background Date Signed. November 3, 2005 Alliance Overview. The purpose of the alliance is to develop training and education programs on health and safety issues targeted to the Arts and Science educational programs within the technical college system. Implementation Team Members. Leslie Ptak, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Madison OSHA Office Cynthia Eghbalnia, Environmental Health and Safety Manager, MATC II. Implementation Team Meetings October 11, 2005 April 4, 2006 July 21, 2006 III. Activities and Products Evaluation Period. This report covers the period of November 3, 2005 through January 26, 2007. Alliance Activity. Used the Madison Area Technical College email distribution system to send OSHA information and materials that were of interest to these customers. Four conferences hosted or co-hosted by the Madison Area Office or OSHA. Residential Construction Safety VPPPA Regional Conference 2006 Creating a Safer Environment – A Value Added Program for Resident Care OSHA 10-hour, Spanish language Met with Karen Kretschmann, Basic Skills Training Liaison for the Business and Industry Department at MATC about English as a Second Language courses at MATC. They have an extensive network of ESL classes that they offer to the community and have incorporated information on OSHA into their curriculum. They asked for hard copies of OSHA materials to be used in their classes. Catherine Frederick, a curriculum developer at MATC, contacted the Compliance Assistance Specialist for information on hazards in the food processing industry. She was working on curriculum for a course for workers in this industry and wanted specific examples of hazards to which food processing employees were exposed. Numerous examples, based on the experience of the Madison Office, were provided. One fact sheet on occupational health nursing and local resources for contacting an OHN (we have an alliance with the South Central Wisconsin Association of Occupational Health Nurses Used MATC facilities to host a four hour program on residential construction. This program was given on February 23, 2006 and was attended by about 55 people in the residential construction trade. Presenters were: Chad Greenwood, Compliance Officer, Madison OSHA Office, Scott Brooks, Safety Director, MA Mortenson Company (an OSHA partnership member) and Chuck McHenry, Safety Training Director, Wisconsin Safety Consultation. IV. Results Due to the re-assignment of the MATC Alliance Implementation Team member to another job within MATC (she is still involved in safety and health), the alliance team has not been able to begin work on the materials for the department of Arts & Sciences. MATC still would like to pursue this goal. The communication with MATC that resulted from this alliance has been useful to the Madison OSHA Office as it has allowed us access to employer and employee groups.   Type of Activity (Conference, Training, Print and Electronic Distribution, etc.) Number of Individuals Reached or Trained Residential construction conference 55 Email distribution of four conference flyers and one brochure 2500 (500 x 5) TOTAL 2555 V.
