Opening Statement, Witness Testimony and Webcast for the Committee Hearing Titled: "The Rise of the Mexican Drug Cartels and U.S. National Security."

On July 9, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., the Committee on Oversight and Government reform held a hearing titled: The Rise of the Mexican Drug Cartels and U.S. National Security.” The purpose of this hearing was to provide an overview and update on the situation facing both U.S. and Mexican authorities in their efforts to disrupt and dismantle the Mexican drug cartels and examine whether U.S. departments and agencies have sufficient tools and capabilities to execute that effort. The hearing also examined what progress has been made in combating the Mexican drug trafficking as well as prospects for success in the near future. In addition, the hearing explored the operational challenges that remain for both U.S. and Mexican authorities, including issues related to coordination and collaboration.

The hearing took place in room 2154 Rayburn House Office Building.
