Steven A. Browning was sworn in on March 20, 2006 by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, as Ambassador to the Republic of Uganda. Ambassador Browning of Texas, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, most recently served as the Minister Counselor for Management in the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. Prior to that he served as Ambassador to the Republic of Malawi.

Ambassador Browning was Diplomat in Residence from 2000 to 2003 at the University of Southern California and University of California at Davis, and Dean of the Foreign Service Institute's School of Professional and Area Studies from 1998 to 2000.

Ambassador Browning has also served as Executive Director for the Bureau of African Affairs at the Department of State from 1996 to 1998. Earlier in his career, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Dar es Salaam 1993 to 1996 and Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Management at the Department of State from 1992 to 1993. He has also served in the Dominican Republic, Kenya, Egypt and Sri Lanka.

Mr. Browning received his bachelor's degree from Baylor University and his master's degree from the University of Houston.
