Title: Recovery Act Limited Competition: Biomedical Research, Development, and Growth to Spur the Acceleration of New Technologies (BRDG-SPAN) Pilot Program (RC3)

Description: This award will utilize the RC3 grant mechanism. The purpose of this pilot program is to address the funding gap between promising research and development (R&D) and transitioning to the market by contributing to the critical funding needed by applicants to pursue the next appropriate milestone(s) toward ultimate commercialization. This program also aims to foster partnerships among a variety of R&D collaborators. NIH intends to commit at least $35 million to support at least 10 awards in fiscal year, but awards are contingent upon the availability of funds. Budget proposals should be limited to $1 million total costs per year for a maximum of three years.

This program is related in scope to the prior NCI SBIR Phase II Bridge Program (RFA-CA-08-021) where the scope of applications has been limited to cancer therapeutics and cancer imaging technologies. In contrast, for the BRDG-SPAN Pilot Program, applications will be considered in any technical area that is relevant to the mission of the NCI. See NIH RFA notice for submission requirements.

Title: Recovery Act Limited Competition: Small Business Catalyst Awards for Accelerating Innovative Research (R43)

Description: This award will use the Phase I SBIR (R43) award mechanism. The purpose is to invite grant applications from small businesses that propose to accelerate innovation through high risk, high reward research and development (R&D) that has commercial potential and is relevant to the mission of the NIH. Solicited applications for support for projects that have the potential to generate high impact results (e.g., products, processes or services) and/or innovative research applications, research tools, techniques, devices, inventions, or methodologies. In accord with the funding priority of this initiative to attract applicants without a history of SPIR/STTR support from NIH, the focus of the projects solicited by the FOA is on early stage technology development. NIH intends to commit at least $5 million to make approximately 20-25 awards for fiscal year 2010. Budget requests are limited to $200,000 total costs for a maximum project period of one year. Description: Guidance to applicants responding to NIH Announces the Availability of Recovery Act Funds for Competitive Revision Applications (NOT-OD-09-058) that are competitive revisions for parent awards for which the activity code of the application has not transitioned to electronic submission. Description: The purpose of the NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) program is to stimulate research in educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the Nation's research scientists, but that have not been major recipients of NIH support. These AREA grants create opportunities for scientists and institutions otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH programs, to contribute to the Nation's biomedical and behavioral research effort. Description: Those with NCI-funded research projects may apply for an administrative supplement to support early phase advanced imaging in therapeutic clinical trials under approved protocols or protocols that will be approved shortly that address the following scientific areas: 1) development of FLT-PET as a predictive marker in cancer therapy of solid-tumors, 2) NaF-PET as a pharmacodynamic biomarker, or 3) application of USPIOs to direct brain cancer therapy.
