CM/ECF is a replacement
for the former case management system, (ICMS / PACER), within the federal courts that
allows courts the ability to use and upload electronic documents to docket sheets.
Why CM/ECF?
The old case management system needed to be replaced because it did not provide adequate access and could no longer be supported. The courts have embraced the power of the Internet
to improve court operations and public service. Electronic filing allows
better document management and improved access to the judges and to the public.
What are the benefits of CM/ECF?
CM/ECF is an internet-based system that:
Improves business processes
and procedures;
Provides flexibility to meet local
needs;
Enhances access to court
files and documents for judges;
Provides opportunities to further the
professional development of staff;
Improves public access;
Allows immediate noticing;
Provides better reports, calendaring.
What does
CM offer?
CM not only offers
the capabilities of previous Administrative Office developed case management systems, but
expands on them by providing:
User friendly screens for
data entry
Easier case information retrieval
and reporting
Multiple access so users can process
documents at the same time
Reports generated from a single integrated system: (e.g., CJRA Reports, Magistrate Judge's Workload Reports (MJSTAR),
Docket Activity Reports).
What are Electronic Case Files (ECF)?
Electronic case files
are collections of documents stored in electronic format instead of in
paper. Documents can be created electronically by parties and court staff
or paper copies can be scanned. All documents are stored in Portable Document
Format (PDF).
