MEMORANDUM FOR REGIONAL ADMINISTRATORS
THRU: LEO CAREY
Director
Directorate of Field Operations
FROM: EDWARD BAIER
Director
Directorate of Technical Support
SUBJECT: Safety Hazard Information Bulletin: Black Gold Model 150 Waste Oil Furnace

On March 2, 1987, the Office of General Industry Compliance Assistance of the Directorate of Field Operations forwarded a Consumer Product Incident Report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission on the Black Gold Model 150 Waste Oil Furnace to the Assistant Regional Administrators for Technical Support. The report originated with Sgt. Dan Thomas of the Michigan State Fire Marshall's Office.

Sgt. Thomas indicated that fires resulting from faulty ceramic heat exchangers have been associated with use of the Black Gold Model 150 Furnace. Mr. David Pethke of Black Gold acknowledges that Black Gold has had problems with vendor-supplied ceramic exchangers and has replaced such exchangers with stainless steel exchangers. Black Gold has also attempted through its distributors and through certified letters to contact purchasers of Model 150 units with the suspect exchangers.

It is likely that most users of the Black Gold Model 150 have received notices from the manufacturer regarding the defect. Nevertheless, some defective units may be still in use in some workplaces. Therefore, we are attaching copies of two notices issued by the manufacturer for your information and use as appropriate.
