Using Images to Reconstruct Sound Recordings: Progress and Prospects

The basis of image processing as a method to recover sound from mechanical carriers will be reviewed. Recent progress using two and three dimensional imaging methods, in collaboration with the Library of Congress, will be discussed. Recently the I.R.E.N.E. project (Image, Reconstruct, Erase Noise, Etc.) was approved by NEH and will lead to the construction of an optical scanning machine for the Library of Congress. The design, testing, and performance expectations for this machine will be described.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Carl Haber has been working at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) since 1985 and is currently a senior scientist there. In 2002, Dr. Haber was made a Fellow of the American Physical Society. His current research includes development and construction of silicon detector electronics for the CDF Run2 upgrade Silicon detector module construction project at LBL for the ATLAS detector for the CERN Large Hadron Collider.
