NOAA's  PocketChart
Table with PocketCharts Displayed
NOAA's PocketChart
The new NOAA PocketChart is a special-purpose map compiled for beginning recreational boaters.  It is an eye-catching, inexpensive, introductory charting product that has a miniaturized image of a NOAA nautical chart on one side; and safety, boating, and educational information on the reverse.  Beginning boaters can use the PocketChart as a locator, helping them answer their two most frequent questions:  “Where am I?” and “How do I get to…?”  Each PocketChart chart reverse side has a different mix of safety, boating, and educational information compiled from federal, state, and cooperating private sources.  This information will increase the safety and enjoyment of a beginner’s boating experience.

Chart Side Content:

The chart side is a complete, full color NOAA chart, reduced in scale to an average of 34% of full scale.  The text is legible, but the soundings and other small text are very small.  The result is suitable for its intended use as a locator, but is not suitable for real navigation.

The chart has been overlaid with enlarged text for certain populated places important to recreational boaters.  Key aids-to-navigation, visible landmarks, and water bodies have also been highlighted to help with visual navigation.  The overlay is to help boaters use the PocketChart as a locator.

The PocketChart is re-assembled by NOAA from up-to-date files every time they are ordered by retailers.

Reverse Side Content:

The reverse side contains a standard panel that becomes a “cover” when the PocketChart is folded.  This cover identifies the chart title and has a small sketch of what area the chart covers.  The rest of the reverse side is a mix of safety, education, and boating information.

Examples of information that may be included on the reverse side:

  • Selected information from the United States Coast Pilot®
  • Table 2 tide correctors
  • Safety information from Coast Guard publications
  • State boating education regulations, boat licensing requirements, state rules and regulations
  • Nautical chart design and usage information
  • Coast Guard navigation rules
  • National Estuarine Research Reserve information
  • Weather information or warnings

The information on each chart’s reverse side has some information specific to that chart, and some information that applies to all areas.  The information differs from chart to chart.
