Today’s signing of the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA)  partnership agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State of Louisiana through the Coastal Restoration and Protection Agency (CPRA) is a major milestone toward improving interior drainage in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes.

This agreement, which is a result of the hard work of Governor Bobby Jindal, paves the way for $1.3 billion in federally authorized projects to move forward as committed to by President George W. Bush in August 2007.

The projects under this agreement will improve drainage during the frequent rainstorms in the city and will help safeguard property during larger tropical events.  Coupled with the President’s commitment to provide 100-year hurricane protection by the beginning of the hurricane season in 2011, these projects mark a significant step toward a stronger and safer New Orleans.

The Office of the Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding has been engaged in facilitating and streamlining the recovery effort, providing key federal support and resources to state and local leaders, as well as reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to the people of the Gulf Coast.
