Southeastern U.S. Wildlife, Ecology, and Conservation in the News Headlines about biodiversity in Southeastern U.S. states including ecosystems, organisms, and human interactions. This feed is configured by the Southern Appalachian Node of the National Biological Information Infrastructure to display news from southeastern U.S. states including Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.
New Species Profiles for Species in Need of Conservation For amphibians, birds, fishes, mammals, and reptiles, new SAIN content provides detailed information about species recognized by Southeastern U.S. state wildlife agencies as in greatest need of conservation. Community Resource Mapper Now Available The Southeast Watershed Forum Community Resource Mapper provides a free, user-friendly, on-line mapping service that will help communities integrate natural resource protection into their land use planning efforts.
Frogs and toads of the region are now spotlighted under the SAIN Animals and Plants of the Region: Amphibians pages. With 42 species, regional frogs and toads include narrow-mouthed toads, neotropical frogs, tree frogs, true frogs, and spadefoots. The new pages present regional species with state distributions grouped by genera with links to detailed NatureServe species profiles and National Wildlife Federation species overviews. Kingston Ash Pond Failure
On December 22, 2008, 5.4 million cubic yards of coal combustion waste mixed with water escaped from a 40 acre settling pond after breaching an earthen dam at TVA's Kingston Fossil Plant near Harriman, Tennessee, flooding 400 acres and entering thee rivers.
