Press Release United States Forces-Afghanistan January 2, 2009 Release Number 20090201-02 Afghan Commandos, Coalition forces kill one insurgent in Herat KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan Commandos and Coalition forces killed one insurgent and detained five others during an operation in Sanowghan, Zer-e-Koh Valley, in Herat province Dec. 28. The operation was conducted in response to recent insurgent activity in Sanowghan. The Zer-e-Koh Valley is a historic sanctuary for insurgent commanders and activities. During the operation, two men, 12 women and 18 children were safeguarded by the combined forces. The insurgent killed, fired upon the Commandos as they approached. The Commandos responded with precision small-arms fire. There were no other shots fired. Upon conclusion of the engagement, the combined forces conducted a key leader engagement with village elders to discuss the reasons for the operation. No Afghan Commandos, Coalition forces or civilian casualties were reported. -30- United States Forces Afghanistan's mission, in coordination with NATO's International Security Assistance Force, is to conduct operations to defeat terrorist networks and insurgents by developing effective governance and building the Afghan National Security Force.
