BISMARCK, N.D. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated more than $1.7 million in Public Assistance to the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services (NDDES) to reimburse state and local agencies for eligible expenses related to the disaster response and flood fighting.
As of close of business April 5, FEMA has approved reimbursements for emergency work totaling $2.29 million and forwarded the 75 percent federal share ($1.7 million) to the states bank account.
The North Dakota declaration for the severe storms and flooding beginning March 13 authorizes reimbursements for emergency protective measures taken to protect lives and property.
Public Assistance funding is one way federal tax dollars are returned to local communities, and ultimately to the citizens who live in them and benefit from public services.
FEMA Public Assistance funding is only part of the federal spending for disaster response. FEMA coordinates response by other federal agencies through mission assignments to perform specific tasks, such as search and rescue and traffic safety in evacuations from disaster
