BISMARCK, N.D. -- As conditions continue to change across North Dakota, state and federal emergency managers have begun reallocating resources while planning for an expected second crest of the Red River later this month. The response is being coordinated by the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services (NDDES) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The following resources have been allocated or remain in place in the local, tribal, state and federal flood fighting effort:
- FEMA has obligated $1.7 million in Public Assistance grant funding to reimburse the North Dakota National Guard and the city of Fargo for costs incurred in battling flood waters.
- FEMA has sent Four Mobile Disaster Recovery Centers to Grand Forks to be used if needed.
- The American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and other community organizations have provided 328,510 meals.
- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is constructing and maintaining emergency levees in Fargo and 15 other North Dakota cities and has provided more than 9.2 million sandbags.
- Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is performing search and rescue and evacuation missions. CBP continues to fly unmanned aerial survey missions with the Predator B and is patrolling levees and flood-threatened neighborhoods on foot and in all-terrain vehicles.
- The U.S. Coast Guard, which is managing combined search and rescue operations, reports there have been 135 flood rescues in North Dakota by all air and water assets.
- Eight federal/state Individual Assistance Program damage assessment teams are surveying flood-damaged houses and other structures to determine what further assistance may be required.
- Eight shelters are caring for 97 household pets.
- North Dakota has established a 211 hotline to collect offers of help - both donations and unaffiliated volunteers.
FEMA leads and supports the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation, to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters.
