The National Institutes of Health is transitioning from paper submission of grant applications to electronic submission via the web portal of Grants.gov, while simultaneously phasing out the PHS398 grant application form and replacing it with the SF424 [Research and Research-related (R&R)] application. This staged transition began in December 2005 and will culminate in September 2007. Those funding types yet to transition are: Career Development; Fellowship; Training; K12; U45; D71/U2R; P; G12; M01; S06; SC1; SC2; SC3; R10/U10; R24/U24; U01; U19; U54; U56. Before an investigator can apply for a funding opportunity, s/he must install PureEdge Viewer, a free program that provides access to grant applications. To find a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), go to the Weekly NIH Funding Opportunities and Notices Table of Contents at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/WeeklyIndex.cfm. This link is also found on our Home page. NIH-specific FOAs can also be found and downloaded from Grants.gov. Follow the FOA instructions to complete the SF424 (R&R) and PHS 398 forms. FOA instructions will override standard instructions for completing the SF424 (R&R). Below is the checklist for applications are components needed to submit an electronic application to the NIH from ORNL. Also provided are convenience resources and a guide to completing the SF424 (R&R) application. Part I of the guide has been extracted for quick reference with information pertinent to ORNL included.
