How do I find information on global tobacco use?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC’s) Global Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (GTPCP) works with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners to prevent death and disease through effective and sustainable global tobacco prevention and control.
The Global Tobacco Control section of CDC's Smoking & Tobacco Use Web site provides information about global efforts and allows you to access data materials and resources including information on the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) and the Global Health Professionals Survey (GHPS). The WHO Tobacco Web site is another primary source of data and information on global tobacco use.

How does tobacco use affect people worldwide?
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 1.3 billion adults currently use tobacco and that tobacco use causes about 1 in 10 deaths worldwide, or about 5 million deaths each year. Unless smoking patterns change, WHO estimates that this figure will double by 2020. Tobacco use is one of the leading preventable causes of death in the world. It is expected that half of the world’s current smokers—or about 650 million people—will eventually die as a result of tobacco use.
